Ground & access
Hiking and horse trail with several log footbridges and fords. The rocks at the falls are very slippery; reaching the upper part of the right-hand fall is a slippery scramble.

From the Buckhorn Gap trailhead, follow the orange-blazed Buckhorn Gap Trail down to Avery Creek. Where the Avery Creek Trail splits off, stay on the orange blazes, cross the creek and follow Henry Branch upstream on footbridges beside the horse fords. At about 1.6 miles, turn left on Twin Falls Trail (#604) to the falls. Return the same way.

Plan your visit

Buckhorn Gap Trail (#103) from Avery Creek Road (FR 477), then the short Twin Falls Trail (#604) spur

Waterfall Hero lists a 3.8 mile hike length; Rich Stevenson describes a 4 mile round trip. If Avery Creek Road is still gated past the stables, add about 1.3 miles each way on the road on foot.

Where to start

Pull-off on the right at the Buckhorn Gap Trail (#103) trailhead, about 2.6 to 2.7 miles up gravel Avery Creek Road (FR 477) from US 276. The route description dates from 2025. At that time FR 477 was gated just past the riding stables, with a new parking area 1.4 miles up the road and about 1.3 miles of road walking to the trailhead.

Timing & water

Whether the FR 477 gate past the stables is still closed is not confirmed. The Forest Service Helene closure list does not name Avery Creek Road. Ask the Pisgah Ranger District, (828) 877-3265.
