- Slippery path to the river, then a boulder scramble with no trail. The river floods quickly after rain; do not go in during or for a day or two after rain.
La Canoa Falls is a falls of about 70 feet in a narrow rock gorge on the Río Blanco area of El Yunque's south side, just above the El Hippie swimming hole in Naguabo. Discover Puerto Rico says the river and falls are reached by public road, not through the main El Yunque entrance. From PR-191 at kilometer 28, cross the large concrete bridge, take the first right on a very narrow road, turn right after a small bridge and drive to the end of the road. A slippery path leads down to the El Hippie pool. La Canoa Falls is above the huge rock on the upper right of the pool; the route is a scramble up and around the rocks on the right side. Puerto Rico Day Trips calls this a very dangerous area, says people have died or been badly hurt here, and recommends going with a paid guide.
