This route was written before Helene. From the gate, follow the dirt road 1 mile to a fork and turn left. Hike 0.3 miles to the Cove Creek crossing and expect to wade. The old road then climbs to fields; work through them to the far right corner, 0.4 miles from the crossing. A path enters the woods and leads 200 yards to a point near Little Cove Creek. From there, a winding makeshift path with some flagging leads about 0.45 miles upstream, sometimes in the creekbed, to the 45-foot falls. Kevin Adams expects Helene affected this hike.

Where to start

At the gate 0.1 miles up the NCWRC Game Land access road, a dirt road on the right just before the Green River bridge, 3.75 miles down Green River Cove Road from I-26 exit 59. Published coordinates: 35.27433, -82.30398.

Timing & water

Kevin Adams reports the access road is currently closed to everyone except property owners. In July 2026 NCDOT began rebuilding Green River Cove Road, with temporary access for residents and visitors via Silver Creek Road from Mill Spring. Whether the game land gate can be reached that way is not confirmed.
