From Brevard take US 64 west to Lake Toxaway, stay on US 64/NC 281 about 2.5 miles, then turn left on NC 281 south. Drive 3.7 miles, passing Gorges State Park, turn left onto Brewer Road and park on the roadside near NC 281. Walk the gated Forest Road 87. In about 1 mile it descends to the Thompson River and fords it. At 2.2 miles, where the main trail crosses a tributary, leave it and climb an overgrown road to the right, through downed trees and rhododendron, for about 0.3 miles to where it crosses another tributary. Follow that tributary from above. After about 0.2 miles it bends sharply left; descend to the creek at a confluence, cross the island between the two streams, and stay above the creek on the left bank (facing downstream) to reach the base of the tall falls.
