Ground & access
Very difficult. Steep trail, overgrown old road, creek crossings and a dangerous scramble to any view.

From Bryson City, take US 74 West/US 19 South about 16.4 miles into the Nantahala Gorge and turn right into a small picnic parking area. A path crosses the railroad tracks to the yellow-blazed Bartram Trail. Turn left and cross Ledbetter Creek (the bridge had washed out when the source visited), then climb steeply about 0.8 miles. Near the top of the ridge, turn left on an overgrown old road that descends to Handpole Branch, crosses it a couple of times and fades out. Bushwhack a short way downstream to the top of the falls, where a tributary adds a small waterfall. Climbing down to a viewpoint is extremely difficult. This is a partial guide: the end of the route has no trail and no safe described view of the whole waterfall.
