Upcountry South Carolina: Hospital Rock Falls

Hospital Rock Falls is beside the Hospital Rock Trail in Jones Gap State Park. From the main parking area, follow the path to the visitor center, continue on the paved path around the trout hatchery pond and follow signs for campsites 1 to 4. The Hospital Rock Trail starts past campsite 4 and climbs northeast on an old roadbed. After about a mile, most of the falls can be seen to the left, with the tallest part farther off the trail. Hospital Rock itself is about 0.5 mile farther. Other small falls on Rocky Branch lie close by. Return the same way.

Where to start

Jones Gap State Park main parking lot, 303 Jones Gap Road, Marietta. The park says parking reservations are required for guaranteed entry on weekends and holidays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., parking is very limited in October and November, and roadside parking is not allowed.

Park open 9 a.m. to sunset daily; trails close one hour before sunset.

Before you go

Jones Gap State Park admission: $6 adults, $3.75 SC seniors, $3.50 children 6 to 15, free for ages 5 and under. Hikers must fill out a registration card at the trailhead.
