- Easy to moderate trail with small ups and downs and logs to step over, then a steep, difficult scramble down a bank. Do not go near the edge at the top of the falls.
Walk back across the bridge over Harper Creek and take Phillips Branch Trail (#252), which heads up beside the road and then turns right to follow Phillips Branch upstream. Do not follow any foot path up Harper Creek. In just under half a mile there is a winter view of the 40-foot falls from the trail. A little farther, a steep scramble path drops to the base. The upper part is not visible from the base. Return the same way.

Timing & water
The Wilson Creek Gorge day use area reopened in February 2026 after Hurricane Helene closures. Harper Creek Trail, which starts nearby, is still listed as closed; Phillips Branch Trail is not on the Forest Service closure list. The route accounts are from before Helene. Foliage hides the trail view in warm months.
