Moderate on the old road, but two wading crossings, an overgrown confusing section and a steep bushwhack with no trail. Rocks are very slippery.

From Lake Toxaway, drive north on NC 281 about 11 miles and turn right on Tanasee Creek Road just after the bridge at the head of Tanasee Creek Lake. Go 1 mile, continue onto Wolf Mountain Road, and park at the pulloff on the right in 0.4 miles, before the road becomes four-wheel-drive. An old logging road follows Tanasee Creek upstream high above the creek. Stay right at an open section at about 0.5 miles to remain on national forest. At about 2 miles wade Tanasee Creek, follow it along the left bank (facing downstream) about 0.3 miles and wade back; the road is overgrown and confusing here, and there are two old roads. On the upper road, at 2.6 miles, cross a tributary. Cavern Falls is upstream: go about 50 feet past the crossing and bushwhack up to the left away from the rhododendron, reaching Lower Cavern Falls at about 3480 feet and then the base of the 100 foot overhanging Cavern Falls. This is a partial guide: there is no trail for the last section.
