Ground & access
Rough, muddy dirt road with stream and spillway crossings. Do not cross if water is up or moving fast. Flash floods can turn ankle-deep water chest-high in under an hour. Remote, with spotty phone reception.

The Weeping Wall is the waterfall-streaked inner wall of Mount Waialeale. Hawaii-Guide routes visitors from the Keahua Arboretum parking lot along the Wailua Forest Management Road (left at the fork) to the gate and then the stream diversion weir, where you can see into the basin when clouds allow. The guide deliberately does not route visitors to the base of the wall, which it calls extremely difficult and technical.

Hawaii-Guide totals 3.5 miles one way from the Keahua parking lot to the gate, plus about 0.5 mile to the weir, and says to figure about 8 miles round trip if you stop at the weir. Going on to the base of the wall is much farther and is not described here.

Where to start

Parking lot at the end of paved Kuamoo Road (Highway 580) beside Keahua Arboretum. The road beyond is unpaved and very rough; Hawaii-Guide says the state may lock a gate on weekdays during road work.

Timing & water

Weather and flooding control access. The source's notes on the inner gate being open date from visits in 2009 to 2012. Current gate and road status were not confirmed.
