Kīpahulu District, Haleakalā National Park: Pīpīwai Trail to the Waimoku Falls viewing area

The National Park Service gives 4 miles roundtrip and 800 feet of elevation change for the Pīpīwai Trail to the Waimoku Falls viewing area.

Moderately strenuous. Climbs about 800 feet. Boardwalks and footbridges through the bamboo forest. The park says off-trail travel is dangerous and illegal.

Where to start

Drive the Hāna Highway to the Kīpahulu District, about 12 miles past the town of Hāna, and park in the district visitor area. A HAWAIʻI Magazine visitor account describes the Pīpīwai trailhead across the way from the Kīpahulu Visitor Center and Kūloa Point Trail start.

Timing & water

Check posted trail closures before starting. The park recommends against entering the streams because of flash floods and rock slides.

Before you go

Haleakalā National Park entrance fee: $30 per private vehicle, valid three days for both the Summit and Kīpahulu districts. The park says to pay by credit card.
